New weigh-in-motion installed on I-15 in Idaho

On I-15 just southeast of Pocatello Idaho, northbound drivers whose trucks are within legal size and weight limits now have a 50-50 shot at bypassing the scales. This is thanks to the newly completed weigh-in-motion system installed at the scales, located at the Inkom Port of Entry.

For any drivers unfamiliar with the system, as the truck approaches the Port, sensors on the road detect the truck’s gross and axle weights, as well as its height and length. Drivers are then informed via a transponder in their truck (if so equipped) and/or the electronic highway sign telling the driver to either bypass the weigh station or pull into the Port Of Entry. Of course, drivers can still get pulled into the Port randomly.

This is a real fuel and time saver for truck drivers. According to the Idaho Transportation Department, “approximately 3100 commercial vehicles use the port each day, and another 14,000 passenger vehicles pass by on Interstate 15. The estimated annual savings to the industry is based on time and fuel savings.”

Thank you, Idaho!
