Tanker rollover shuts down I-5 in Seattle for eight hours, but tacos save the day

A tanker truck hauling propane rolled over around 10 a.m., when traffic in front of the driver slowed down and he wasn’t able to stop in time. This caused both the northbound and southbound lanes to be closed, and they remain that way until 6 p.m.

Another factor in the long delay was the need to transfer the fuel from the rolled over truck onto a second tanker. Then the tanker had the lifted upright again by two trucks and Seattle firefighters.

Meanwhile, people are stuck in that traffic for several hours. Stranded. Scared. Not knowing if they would ever get moving again. Hungry and thirsty. Wait, what IS that up ahead? I’m not sure, but it’s a little green and red truck, and people are lined up besides it. Hey, that guy has tacos!

Yes, you heard it right. It was Tacos El Tajin, a food truck with, well… Tacos of course. And he was open for business. What was once a miserable affair, was now a fiesta!

Okay, I went a little too far there.

Tacos El Tajin’s owner, Thomas Lopez, told the Seattle Times that he ended up missing their lunchtime stop in the South Lake Union neighborhood, but said he welcomes new customers wherever he is.

“We are ready to serve food, everywhere,” said Lopez.

Yeah, and he was probably charging $20 a taco!
